Intuitive Visions: Shifting the Margins

From 3 – 31 May, Outside In will be holding an exhibition in partnership with HOUSE 2015 and Phoenix Brighton. Intuitive Visions: Shifting the Margins will showcase work by nine Outside In artists: Aradne, Blair McCormick, John Ackhurst, Jonathan Kenneth William Pettitt, Luc Raesmith, Martin Phillimore, Michelle Roberts, Paul Bellingham and Sally Ward.

Five Brighton-based selectors chose the final works to be included in the exhibition, bearing in mind the overall theme of HOUSE 2015: ‘edge, shift and marginality.’ The selectors included: Judy Stevens, co-Director of HOUSE Festival; David Jones, a Brighton based Award Winning artist; Simon Powell, co-Founder of Creative Future, a Brighton-based organisation nurturing marginalised artists and writers in their creative development; Karin Mori, Artistic Programme Manager at Phoenix Brighton; and Jim Sanders, a Brighton-based contemporary artist.

Aradne finds that the only way to arrive at something new is to actually start the process of making. Often ending up drawing with a sewing machine onto fabric, Aradne finds this technique enables her to produce the figures she sees in her mind. Similarly, Blair McCormick never knows what he is going to end up with. Using batik – because the process is so experimental – he starts from doodles, which are influenced by everything he sees, feels and experiences, as well as by other art forms including graffiti, music, dance and sculpture.

Also in keeping with Blair and Aradne, who begin first and then let the process guide them, Jonathan Kenneth William Pettitt starts with an image in mind, then as he develops the piece, he finds that different things work their way in. He is inspired by spiritual things, as well as other artists including Paul Klee, Picasso, El Greco, Bosch and Dali and the stories of Rudyard Kipling, C.S. Lewis and J.R.R Tolkien. Paul Bellingham uses his intuition when he creates his ‘blind’ drawings. Starting with a blank piece of paper, he closes his eyes and draws a head. He then opens his eyes and adds colour.

Both Luc Raesmith and Sally Ward breathe new life into once-used objects and fabrics. Sally picks up materials from charity shops; fabrics that already have a history of their own, before stamping, spraying and sewing them to give them new life. Luc is a ‘magpie’ for images, textiles and metals, plus beach and street plastic flotsam.

Martin Phillimore started expressing himself through art after becoming involved with illicit substances in his early twenties. He found the intensity of what he was producing was a reflection of his subconscious and what he was feeling. Once he starts a piece, he’ll often leave it mid way through, start another piece and then return to the original depending on how he feels.

Michelle Roberts creates her work in the Project Art Works studio, and has recently refined a dense and highly personalised approach to making images. Working methodically across each canvas, section by section, she creates colourful and complex words; each with a distinct logic and meaning that connect to her own life. Also creating from personal experience, John Ackhurst finds inspiration from copying images, or stories that he’s writing. He says: “Drawing makes me happy and I would like to do more of it.”
